International Hotel, Las Vegas
Toward the end of the 1960’s, Elvis’s career seemed to be coming to an end. He hadn’t performed in concert for many years. Presley was looking to turn his career in the right direction. In late 1968, Elvis made his comeback special for television. It proved to be a great success. Next, he fixed his attention on returning to live performances. Las Vegas seemed to be the place to start.
The International Hotel opened in Las Vegas on July 2, 1969. Later that month, Presley performed for the first time there. In the audience, there were reporters and critics from the music and entertainment fields. Stars, including Cary Grant, Dionne Warwick, and Sammy Davis Jr. also added to the star-studded audience. Though Elvis was more nervous than usual, he delivered a performance of a lifetime.
His concerts broke attendance records for the hotel, with over 100,000 people experiencing his shows. In the following years, Elvis held concerts throughout the country, but he always returned to Vegas.
