Witchcraft
Elvis recorded “Witchcraft” on May 26, 1963. It was released on October 1, 1963, and reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song was originally recorded in 1956 by the Spiders, a gospel-turned R&B group. They had greater success with the song, reaching number 5 on the R&B charts.
“Witchcraft” was written by Dave Bartholomew, a Louisiana native that helped to create and define the New Orleans sound of the 1950s. A number of his songs were hits for him and others, including “I Hear You Knocking,” “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” and “Let the Good Times Roll.” He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer for his work producing early rhythm and blues songs.
