Playing for Keeps
What a year 1956 was for Elvis! In March he signed a contract with Colonel Parker, a move that would turn out to be monumental. The following month he began a 13-year acting career in Hollywood. After doing a screen test for Hal B. Wallis, Elvis signed a 7-year contract with Paramount Studios.
It was while he was in Hollywood shooting his first film Love Me Tender, that Elvis recorded “Playing for Keeps” at Radio Recorders Studio. It was released in 1957, with “Too Much” on the other side. Advance orders had reached almost 500,000 before the January 4 released date. The song rocketed to the Billboard Hot 100 list, where it spent nine weeks and sold a million copies. By the end of the year, Billboard announced that Elvis had the most songs in the Top 100 since the list began.
