Such a Night

Elvis recorded “Such a Night” on April 4, 1960.  The song was written by rhythm and blues artist Lincoln Chase, who was also a successful songwriter.  The tune had previously been recorded by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters, Johnnie Ray, Dinah Washington, and Conway Twitty.  Released with “Never Ending” on the flip side, “Such a Night” spent eight weeks on the Billboard charts and peaked at number 16.

Lincoln Chase wrote several light-hearted songs that became hits, including “The Name Game,” “Nitty Gritty,” “The Clapping Song,” and “Jim Dandy.”  Nearly 30 years after the songs first charted, “The Clapping Song” was featured on the soundtrack for the film Flatliners, and “Jim Dandy” can be heard in the box office blockbuster Dazed and Confused.
