Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever!  This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.

Mystic has permanently bonded a vibrant image of Elvis to this uncirculated US Half Dollar.  The coin features an original photograph of Presley from his estate’s official archives and is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Peace in the Valley

Elvis’ love of gospel music is clearly shown in his beautiful rendition of “Peace in the Valley.”  The song was written by Rev. Thomas Dorsey.

Dorsey is known as the father of modern African-American gospel music, which emerged in Chicago during the early 1930s under his leadership.  Dorsey founded the first gospel choir at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1931 and wrote one of the great gospel standards, “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.”

However, Rev. Dorsey began his musical career as “Georgia Tom,” playing barrelhouse piano in Al Capone’s Chicago speakeasy in Ma Rainey’s Jazz Band.  Dorsey also played with Ma Rainey’s Rabbit Foot Minstrels and married Rainey’s dresser, Nettie.  (Known as the “mother of the blues,” one of Ma Rainey’s early hits was “See See Rider.”)  Sadly, Dorsey lost Nettie and his first child during childbirth in 1930.  He wrote “Precious Lord” in their memory and devoted himself to gospel music shortly after.

Elvis performed “Peace in the Valley” during his final appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957.  A few days later, Elvis recorded the single in the same session that produced “All Shook Up” and “Mean Woman Blues.”  The single spent 10 weeks on the Billboard charts and peaked at #39.
