You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me
The 1970 hit “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” was originally written in Italian by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini. Titled “Io che non vivo (senza te),” meaning “I, who can’t live (without you),” this was the most successful song in English singer Dusty Springfield’s career.
Elvis recorded the English version as part of his That’s the Way It Is album. The session took place during the evening of June 6, at RCA’s studios in Nashville. Six other songs were also recorded that night. During the taping of “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me,” the producer was satisfied with the quality of the second take. Elvis wasn’t and insisted on another try. This time Presley was happy with the result.
The song was released as a single on October 6. It reached #11 on the Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 list. It did even better on the Easy Listening charts – with a #1 spot. This tune was not just a hit in America, but in other English-speaking countries. It topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and England.
“You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” was enjoyed by the British a second time when it was re-released in 2007. It again climbed the charts, breaking into the top 30 in Ireland and England.
