“The Wonder of You” was recorded live at the International Hotel in Las Vegas on February 19, 1970. The shows were the second of Elvis’ record-breaking Vegas concert engagements. Each day of the month-long engagement featured both dinner and midnight shows – and every show was sold out. Dedicated to his loyal fans, Elvis frequently performed impromptu third shows at 3 a.m. for those who were unable to buy tickets to the earlier appearances. RCA taped parts of each show and compiled the best clips to make “On Stage – February 1970.”
The song, “Wonder of You,” was originally written for RCA star Perry Como by Baker Knight, a legend known as the “songwriter’s songwriter.” But pop vocalist Ray Peterson was the first artist to record it back in 1959. RCA had picked Peterson up in 1958 to fill the “teen idol” void left by Elvis, who was then serving in the Army. The song was a huge hit, propelling Peterson’s up-and-coming career. Peterson saw great success throughout the 1960s, especially on the West Coast.
Presley’s version of “The Wonder of You” was released with “Mama Liked the Roses” on the flip side. It was an instant hit, becoming his best-selling ballad. It peaked at #9 during its 12-week run on the Billboard charts and topped the UK Singles Chart for several weeks. The song became a concert staple for the rest of Elvis’ career.
