A Big Hunk O’ Love
Written by the songwriting team of Aaron Schroeder and Sid Wyche, “A Big Hunk O’ Love” is one of Elvis’ trademark songs. Elvis recorded the tune on June 10, 1958, while on leave from the Army. Legendary guitar player Chet Atkins had gathered a first-class team of session players for the recording, with Elvis, Chet, and Hank “Sugarfoot” Garland on guitar, Scotty Moore on bass, D. J. Fontana and Buddy Harman on drums, Floyd Cramer on the piano, and the Jordanaires singing back-up vocals. “A Big Hunk o’ Love” was recorded in four takes, and the final version is a combination of the last two
The single was released by RCA Victor on June 23, 1959, with “My Wish Came True” on the flip side. The single had a 14-week run on Billboard’s pop singles chart and peaked at #1. The song was the first of four written by Schroeder that Elvis made into #1 hits. “A Big Hunk ‘O Love” was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1959. More than a decade after its release, Presley sand “A Big Hunk o’ Love” at his Las Vegas shows. The song was also part of his “Aloha from Hawaii” satellite broadcast and the 1972 documentary, “Elvis On Tour.”
