Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever!  This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.

Mystic has permanently bonded a vibrant image of Elvis to this uncirculated US Half Dollar.  The coin features an original photograph of Presley from his estate’s official archives and is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Surrender

During a marathon session in October 1960, Elvis took a break from recording gospel songs for his album “His Hand in Mine” to sing “Surrender.” The tune was an Italian classic called “Torna a Sorrento” (Come Back to Sorrento), with new lyrics by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. Pomus would later say Elvis transformed the song “into a dramatic showcase for his genuinely amazing [abilities]…”

The song was released in February 1961, with the ballad “Lonely Man” on the other side. That song was from the soundtrack of Wild in the Country, an upcoming Presley film.

Variety magazine reviewed “Surrender” in its “Best Bets” column, predicting it would be a hit “because of the vigorous vocalizing that nobody seems to be able to match.” That prediction proved to be true when the song debuted at #24 then rose to #1 the following month and remained on the charts for twelve weeks. It was Elvis’s fifth straight #1 song.

Pomus and Shuman went on to write about 25 songs for Presley. They became some of his favorite writers. Their hits include “Suspicion” and “Viva Las Vegas.”
