I Want You, I Need You, I Love You
Recorded on April 14, 1956, “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” was first released on the album, Elvis. The single went platinum – reaching number one on both the pop and country charts and peaking at number 10 on the R&B charts.
Due to a grueling schedule of performances and personal appearances, Elvis could only spare one night for recording. Immediately following a show in Amarillo, Texas, Elvis and his band boarded a chartered plane for Nashville. During the flight, the jet appeared to run out of fuel in mid-air. The pilot discovered the second fuel tank hadn’t been brought on line. To further complicate matters, the pilot got lost in the dark.
After landing safely, the tense recording session lasted three hours. Elvis recorded the song “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” 17 times, but the producer Steve Sholes wasn’t satisfied with the quality and sent the boys to a hotel to rest. Because of Elvis’ busy schedule, Sholes knew he couldn’t get the young star in the studio again for months. After listening to the takes again, Sholes did something that was rare for the time – he took parts of two takes and spliced them together.
The song was released on May 4, 1956. About 300,000 singles had been preordered, the most in RCA’s history at the time. The following month, Elvis performed “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” on The Milton Berle Show. The song became Elvis’ second gold record with sales of over 1.3 million sold.
