# CNS16051 - Elvis Presley Gold "Tell Me Why" US Half Dollar Commemorative Coin
Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever! This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.
Mystic has permanently bonded a vibrant image of Elvis to this uncirculated US Half Dollar. The coin features an original photograph of Presley from his estate’s official archives and is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises.
Tell Me Why
The coin features the song “Tell Me Why.” The tune is similar to the Gospel song “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” This rhythm and blues ballad was first recorded by R&B artist Marie Knight. Elvis recorded it on January 12, 1957, at Radio Recorders studio in Hollywood.
January 1957 was a busy month for Elvis. On the 8th he celebrated his 22nd birthday. Soon after, the Memphis Draft Board announced Presley would likely be drafted within the next six months. Four days after his birthday, he flew to Hollywood for the recording session. In addition to “Tell Me Why,” this session also produced “All Shook Up,” a song that is closely tied to Presley.
The song wasn’t released until 1966, when RCA Victor, his recording label, was issuing many of Elvis’ previously unreleased songs. The singing star was so busy in his film career he had little time to record new songs. After its release, “Tell Me Why” reached #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and later became a gold record.
