The song “One Broken Heart for Sale” was recorded at the Radio Recorders studio in Hollywood on September 22, 1962. The recording session was originally scheduled to take place in late August, but had to be rescheduled when Elvis became ill.
The hit was part of the soundtrack for the 1963 movie It Happened at the World’s Fair, in which Presley starred with actress Joan O’Brien. “One Broken Heart for Sale” was released by RCA Victor in January 1963 as a single with “They Remind Me Too Much of You” on the flip side. The single brought attention to the upcoming movie and the soundtrack album. The song reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was Elvis’ first RCA song that didn’t make the top five on the chart. In spite of this, the song was certified Gold in 1992.
“One Broken Heart for Sale” was written for Elvis by the team of Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott. They had written the classic Presley hit “Return to Sender,” which had reached number 2 the previous year. They were also the talent behind “Don’t Be Cruel” and “All Shook Up.”
