Elvis Presley Gold "Puppet on a String" US Half Dollar Commemorative Coin

Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever!  This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.

Puppet on a String

Elvis released “Puppet on a String” in 1965. He recorded the vocals for the song on June 16, 1964, at Radio Recorders studio near Los Angeles. The background track had been recorded previously. “Puppet on a String” was released with “Wooden Heart” on the B-side. The song reached number 14 on the Hot 100 chart.

“Puppet on a String” was one of 43 songs written for Elvis by Roy C. Bennett and Sid Tepper. In the 25 years this duo worked together, they produced over 300 songs for various artists.

The song “Puppet on a String” was produced for the movie Girl Happy. In this romantic musical, Elvis plays Rusty, a Chicago nightclub singer. He and his band are ready for a break and plan to go to Florida after their gig is completed. At first, their plans are changed when the owner of the nightclub extends their contract. When the owner hears his college-student daughter, Valerie, plans to go to Florida for Spring Break, he changes his mind. He hires Rusty and his band to keep track of her.

Acting as an undercover chaperone, Rusty falls in love with Valerie while singing the song “Puppet on a String.” When she finds out her father paid Rusty to spend time with her, she breaks up with Elvis’ character. After everything is explained and Valerie’s father realizes his daughter is in love with Rusty, he allows them to spend time together.
