In The Ghetto
Mac Davis wrote “In The Ghetto,” which Elvis recorded on January 21, 1969, during one of his most memorable sessions. Rejuvenated by the success of the 1968 Comeback Special, Elvis returned to Memphis to record for the first time in 14 years. Plagued by tonsillitis and a fever, Elvis turned out some of the best music of his career during all-night marathon sessions. He recorded so many songs during these sessions that it took RCA a year and a half to release them all.
Two albums came out of them, yielding the hit singles “In The Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry, Daddy,” and “Kentucky Rain.” With “Any Day Now” on the flip side, “In The Ghetto” spent 13 weeks on the Billboard charts and peaked at number three. The song was Elvis’s first US Top 10 in four years. It was also extremely popular around the world, occupying the number one spot in Germany, Ireland, Australia, and other countries. Because of its popularity, the song became part of Presley’s live shows in Las Vegas.
Many years later, his daughter, Lisa Marie, sang “In The Ghetto” as a duet with Elvis through the wonders of technology.
The song is about a boy born into a large family in Chicago’s ghetto. He eventually turns to a life of crime and is shot. The man’s child is born just as he dies. According to the lyrics, the son will likely have no choice but to follow in his father’s footsteps.
