Kissin’ Cousins
The song “Kissin’ Cousins” was the title song to a 1964 comedy film Elvis starred in. In the movie, he played two characters who are distant cousins who look alike. One was an Army officer trying to convince his relatives to allow the military to build a missile site on their mountain. The other character lived on the family land.
The song was part of the Kissin’ Cousins album released by RCA Victor in April of that year. The songs had been recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, the previous May and September. Colonel Parker chose to record in Tennessee because Hollywood offered too many distractions for the young super star.
Two versions of the song “Kissin’ Cousins” were recorded during the September session. Presley used his regular voice for the first version and a strong hillbilly accent for the second. The first version was released as a single in February 1964. It peaked at #12 on the charts. The song on the flip side, “It Hurts Me,” made it to #29 on the Billboard Hot 100.
