# CNS16032 - Elvis Presley Gold "If I Can Dream" US Half Dollar Commemorative Coin
Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever! This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.
Mystic has permanently bonded a vibrant image of Elvis to this uncirculated US Half Dollar. The coin features an original photograph of Presley from his estate’s official archives and is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises.
If I Can Dream
Plans were being made for Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special, and the final song was going to be “I’ll be Home for Christmas.” It was decided that song would be replaced, and songwriter Walter Earl Brown was asked to write a new song. “If I Can Dream” was the result. Created just two months after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Brown used direct quotes from King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
When Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, heard Brown sing the song, he said, “This ain’t Elvis’ kind of song.” Presley had a very different reaction. He said, “I’m never going to sing another song I don’t believe in. I’m never going to make another picture I don’t believe in.”
Elvis recorded the song in June 1968. Brown was present during the session and noticed some of the backup singers were crying because Elvis sung with such emotion. One of the singers told Brown Elvis “Means every word.”
The “If I Can Dream” single was released in November, with “Edge of Reality” on the flip side. The song was reached #12 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. It was certified gold on March 27, 1992. Since its release, “If I Can Dream” has been included on many compilations of Elvis’ songs.
