She’s Not You
“She’s Not You” was recorded on March 19, 1962, at RCA Studios in Nashville. It displays Elvis’ vocal range from the opening low notes to the higher tones on the bridge. The song was paired with “Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello,” and they released as a single on July 17. The single spent 10 weeks on the Billboard chart, peaking at number five. It was a huge hit in the United Kingdom as well, maintaining the number one spot for three weeks. It later was certified gold.
This hit was written by the legendary team of Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, and Doc Pomus. This was the first time the three worked together. Pomus had written Elvis hits such as “Surrender,” and “Suspicion” for other artists. Leiber and Stoller were the team behind “Jailhouse Rock” and “King Creole.”
In 1952, Leiber and Stoller wrote a song for blues singer Big Mama Thornton called “Hound Dog.” Four years later, Elvis recorded his own version of the song that would become permanently linked with him. Stoller was on vacation in Europe when Presley’s “Hound Dog” first hit the airwaves and created such a stir in the music world. When he returned, Leiber told him the news, and he answered, “Elvis who?” He soon became very familiar with the star. Years later, Pomus, Leiber, and Stoller were all inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
