# CNS16012 - Elvis Presley Gold "Are You Lonesome Tonight" US Half Dollar Commemorative Coin
Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever! This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.
Mystic has permanently bonded a vibrant image of Elvis to this uncirculated US Half Dollar. The coin features an original photograph of Presley from his estate’s official archives and is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises.
Are You Lonesome Tonight?
“Are You Lonesome Tonight?” was written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926. Intended to be a vaudeville recitation, it was first recorded by Al Jolson. It was the only time Colonel Tom Parker ever suggested a specific song to be recorded, because it was his wife’s favorite.
Elvis recorded “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” in the early morning hours of April 4, 1960, just one month after his Army discharge. The grueling recording session also produced “Fever,” “Like A Baby,” “It’s Now or Never” and six other songs.
RCA delayed the song’s release, worried it didn’t fit Elvis’ new style, but it was eventually released that November. With “I Gotta Know” on the flip side, the single spent 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number one. It reached Gold status on April 15, 1983.
