This hit, recorded in March 1962, peaked at number two on the American Billboard chart and number one in the United Kingdom. It was the “Christmas number one song” in Ireland. After selling over one million copies in the United States, the single was certified “Platinum.”
The song has special meaning for stamp collectors, too. The US Postal Service issued a commemorative Elvis Presley postage stamp on January 8,1993. Many collectors mailed envelopes with this stamp to false addresses so the letter could be marked with “return to sender.”
