The 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (also known as the 1/9) were formed on March 1, 1942, in California. Initially deployed to Auckland, New Zealand, they participated in the Bougainville and Northern Solomons Campaigns as well as the Battles of Guam and Iwo Jima. Like many units, they were deactivated after World War II.
The unit was reactivated for service in Vietnam. It was during that war that the 1st Battalion 9th Marines earned their nickname, “The Walking Dead.” Serving for over 47 months, the unit saw the longest period of sustained combat and had the highest killed-in-action rate in Marine Corps history. Some 93% (747 soldiers) were killed in action. They participated in over 40
campaigns and operations during this time.
In the 1990s, the unit was deployed to Somalia and then the Mediterranean, where they carried out humanitarian and assistance missions. Inactive from 1994 through 2004, the battalion was reformed in 2005 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. Later, during a deployment to the Al Anbar Province, the 1/9 assisted in training Iraqi police to be more efficient and provide a safe community for the locals.
Over the course of the unit’s history, four men have earned the Medal of Honor and 12 have earned the Navy Cross. Additionally, the unit has earned numerous awards including the Presidential Unit Citation.
