Elvis Meets a Boxing Legend
On February 14, 1973, two legends met in a Las Vegas hotel room. On that day, Elvis visited boxer Muhammad Ali and presented him with a custom-designed robe in a similar style to the jumpsuit Elvis is famous for wearing. The rhinestones and jewels formed the words, “People’s Choice,” though they were supposed to have said “People’s Champ.” At the meeting, Ali gave Elvis a pair of boxing gloves he had autographed with “Elvis, You are the Greatest. From Muhammad Ali. Peace 1973.”
Soon after the meeting, Ali went to the Las Vegas Convention Center to fight Joe Bugner. He wore his new robe from Elvis. Famed boxing announcer Howard Cosell asked Ali, “Where did you get that beautiful robe?” Ali told him, “Elvis gave it to me.”
In the years that followed, Elvis and Ali remained friends. In 1985, the famous boxer spoke at an annual memorial service for Presley. He spoke of his admiration for Elvis’s singing ability, saying, “When it comes to singing, nobody had everything like Elvis… I’ll tell the world, Elvis was the greatest of all time.” Three years later, Ali donated the robe he received on their first meeting to the Hard Rock Café in New York City. It was later moved to the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
