Elvis’s First Trip to Paris
While serving in the Army in Germany in 1959, Elvis was granted a 15-day furlough. Beginning on June 13, he traveled to Munich with his friends Lamar Fike, Charlie Hodge, and Rex Mansfield. He then went to Paris, where he spent the bulk of his vacation.
Elvis and his friends stayed at the Prince De Galles Hotel on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and frequented the Moulin Rouge and Lido club. The guys were particularly taken with the Bluebell Girls dancers and invited the girls to spend their free time with them. In fact, the manager of the Lido club had to call Elvis’ hotel to get the girls back in time for one of their shows.
Fearful of flying and wanting to spend as much time in Paris as possible, Elvis rented an $800 limousine to drive himself and his friends back to his base in Germany. Elvis returned to Paris in January the following year with his karate instructor and took Shotokan lessons every day.
