Elvis Dances Despite No Wiggle Ban
This coin honors Elvis’ 1956 appearance in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was put under a strict “no wiggle ban” by the police chief. The sensation over Elvis’ suggestive movements on stage was a major concern for the city’s police department. They’d even contacted the F.B.I. to inquire about how to handle possible riots. And they would record Elvis’ performance for evidence.
On November 25, Elvis put on two shows to crowds of over 8,000. Most of the lyrics were unheard under the screaming of fans. Though Elvis didn’t gyrate as much as usual, he still worked in a few suggestive dances, that apparently went unnoticed by the police, as no charges were filed. In response to the 100 officers present for crowd control, Elvis joked, “I never knew I had so many fans in the Louisville Police Department.”
