Elvis Discovers New “Hound Dog”
This coin commemorates the day Elvis discovered a new version of “Hound Dog” that would become one of his greatest hits. The song was originally written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller and recorded by Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Three years later, Freddie Bell and the Bellboys recorded their own version of the song, substituting silly lyrics to make it more acceptable to mainstream audiences.
In April 1956, Elvis was performing at the New Frontier Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Playing to older audiences than his usual fanbase, the shows were underselling. One night Elvis decided to go see another band in a nearby hotel to take his mind off his troubles. That’s when he discovered Freddie Bell and the Bellboys playing their version of Hound Dog. Elvis cracked up laughing at the silly lyrics and loved the up-beat tempo. He and his band returned every night to see them perform and learn the song. Elvis asked the band’s permission to record it, and they agreed to let him, hoping it would help their own success.
Elvis went on to perform the song in concert and on TV before recording it. “Hound Dog” quickly became his go-to closing number for years.
