Army Press Conference
This coin pictures Elvis at his first press conference after arriving home from his Army service. He’d flown in overnight from Germany and arrived at New Jersey’s Fort Dix at 7:42 a.m. Despite a treacherous snow storm, more than 100 reporters from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, and newsreels braved the weather to attend the legendary press conference.
Also in attendance was Nancy Sinatra, representing her father Frank, who would host Elvis on his show two months later. There was also actress Tina Louise, representing the Mutual radio network. She asked Elvis if he would still dance suggestively. Blushing, Elvis told her his dance moves were natural, and he didn’t plan to change them unless his fans wanted a change. Other reporters repeatedly asked about his marriage plans, hair, and sideburns.
During the press conference, screams came from outside. A large group of teenage fans had assembled and wanted to see Elvis. They were asked to be quiet, but continued to yell.
Two day later, Elvis had one of the happiest days of his life – he was discharged from the Army. He was excited to start recording and acting again as well as spend time with family and friends.
