Dubbed the Hottest Thing in Charlotte

In late January 1956, Elvis had his national debut on the Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show.  Teen girls across the country were introduced to his new style of hillbilly Rock ‘n’ Roll and began to dream of their chance to see the star live on stage.

At the time, Elvis and his band were on tour with Grand Ole Opry stars Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters.  On February 10, they arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, to play four shows at the Carolina Theatre.

Over the course of the day, some 6,000 excited fans filled the auditorium to witness the rising star that was Elvis.  At least a thousand more lined the streets hoping to get in, but were turned away because there wasn’t enough room. Several of the young girls tried to sneak backstage, but were stopped by the extra police called in to control the crowd.  One of the girls exclaimed “I’ll just die if I don’t shake his hand.”  Elvis was amazed at the girls’ reactions to him and said he couldn’t believe it himself.

Local newspapers were filled with reviews of the show the following day.  Many recounted Elvis’ quick rise to fame and described the screaming teenagers entranced by Elvis’ music and moves.  A reporter for the Charlotte News claimed Elvis was “the hottest thing in Charlotte.”  Soon he’d be the hottest thing in the nation.
