Begins Tour with Andy Griffith
This coin honors a tour Elvis did with Andy Griffith. You may remember that in 1956 the two stars appeared together on The Steve Allen Show in a skit called “Range Roundup.” But that wasn’t their first meeting. In late July 1955, Elvis joined Griffith on a nine-show tour in Florida, including stops in Ft. Meyers, Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, and Tampa.
Other performers on the bill included Ferlin Husky, Marty Robbins, Tommy Collins, and Glenn Reeves. Elvis was listed near the bottom of the posters as being brought in “by Popular Demand.” The program for the concert described Elvis as “one of the newest though most exciting new personalities on the Hillbilly field.” The program went on to say, “in a short time the name Elvis Presley on a show meant that there would be a big turnout of teenagers who would scream and squeal with excitement when Elvis would start to sing...” and described his singing style as “completely different from any other singer.”
