Elvis Kicks Off Summer Festival
The 1970 Elvis Presley Summer Festival was a month-long engagement at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, running from August 10 to September 7.
Among the notable guests on opening night were Sammy Davis Jr., Cary Grant, Juliet Prowse, Sonny Liston, Jack Benny, Nancy Sinatra, Xavier Cugat, and his wife, Charo. Other famous fans during later dates of the festival included Neil Diamond, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Roger Moore. As the festival went on, Elvis started adding impersonations of some of these fellow performers to his show, eventually creating a medley of “Polk Annie Salad” that incorporated these impersonations and some of their songs.
The festival was recorded by MGM Studios for a documentary titled Elvis: That’s the Way It Is. Released that November, the documentary was Elvis’ first non-dramatic film since beginning his acting career in 1956. That’s the Way It Is chronicled Elvis’ return to live performances. While the majority of the film featured his live performance at Las Vegas’ International Hotel, the documentary also included some neat behind the- scenes footage and other performances.
