Loving You
Elvis left Memphis by train for Hollywood on January 10, 1957, to film Loving You. To prepare for the film, director Hal Kanter had spent a week in Memphis with Elvis and had seen the near-riot fan response to his performances. Kanter drew upon this experience in the film, which paralleled Elvis’ rise to fame.
Loving You, Elvis’ first film for Paramount, opened July 9, 1957, to sold-out theaters across the US. During filming, Elvis set the tone for histardom by stopping everything to have lunch with a group of fans visiting from San Francisco. The storyline closely resembled his own life as a poor kid who rose to fame as a musician.
Elvis’ parents, Vernon and Gladys, traveled to Hollywood for a month of vacation to watch their son work. During a visit to the studio, Kanter decided to include them as extras in the movie’s grand theater sequence. Loving You is the only film in which Gladys appears and after her untimely death Elvis never watched it again, saying it hurt too much to see his mother on the screen.
When work on the movie ended, Elvis went back to Memphis and bought his much-loved Graceland, which remained his sanctuary for the rest of his life. One week after its release, the movie’s title song, “Loving You,” had sold over a million copies – Elvis’ eighth record to reach that benchmark.
