Graceland Welcomes Scatter
This coin honors one of Elvis’ favorite pets – Scatter the chimpanzee. Elvis bought Scatter from a Memphis cartoonist who’d used him on his local T.V. show. Elvis had lots of fun with Scatter, carrying him around on his shoulders, dressing him up in suits and ties, and most importantly, playing pranks on everyone he could.
When Elvis had girls over to visit, he’d have Scatter hide in the bathroom to scare them. He also thought it was a riot to send one of his drivers out around town with Scatter in the backseat. He’d always wished they could get a car with a hidden driver’s seat in the back, so it would appear as if Scatter was driving the car.
With or without Elvis, Scatter had a tendency for getting into trouble. Scatter loved to drink beer and whiskey, look up girls’ skirts, and tear apart rooms. Elvis loved bringing him along when filming movies. However, after he escaped Elvis’ dressing room and destroyed Samuel Goldwyn’s office, he was banned from the studio.
After a while, Elvis seemed to be the only one who enjoyed Scatter’s antics. The day he chased a gardener into a pool sealed his fate. He was sent back to Graceland where he’d spend the rest of his days in a custom-built, air-conditioned building.
