Memphis Charity Benefit

This coin commemorates Elvis’ 1961 Memphis charities benefit show. Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington and Memphis Mayor Henry Loeb declared February 25, 1961, Elvis Presley Day. A special luncheon was held for Elvis where he was made an honorary colonel and awarded a diamond-studded watch for selling more than 75 million records.

That afternoon and evening, Elvis put on two charity shows, with total attendance reaching over 10,000. He was introduced as “one of the greatest singer-actors of the century.” The concerts raised $47,823 which was distributed among 26 local charities.
