Jam Session with the Fab Four

On August 27, 1965, music history was made. Two of the world’s biggest musical acts met for the first time – Elvis and the Beatles. It was a monumental night for Rock ‘n’ Roll, but unfortunately, not a single photo or recording was made that night. But the stories of the meeting survive.

The Beatles had wanted to meet Elvis for years, but Colonel Parker often brushed them off. However, when the Fab Four was in Los Angeles on tour, they were finally invited to visit Elvis, who was in town to film a movie. Parker established firm rules before the meeting could commence – no press, no pictures, no recordings, and no one else could know about the meeting beforehand.

The historic meeting took place at Elvis’ mansion at 565 Prugia Way in Bel Air. The Beatles arrived around 11 p.m. and met Elvis in his large circular living room. Everyone sat silently for a while, leading Elvis to joke, “If you damn guys are gonna sit here and stare at me all night, I’m gonna go to bed.” After that, John Lennon asked a string of questions about Elvis’ films and music that broke the ice.

After swapping some tour stories, Elvis had some guitars brought in and the five music legends jammed together. Among the songs they played together were “You’re My World” and “I Feel Fine.” At one point, Elvis strummed a few chords on the bass guitar, to which Paul McCartney joked, “Don’t worry, between us, me and Brian Epstein [the Beatles’ manager] will make a star of you soon.”

While the boys jammed, the two managers, Parker and Epstein, spoke in the corner about Elvis doing a series of UK concerts. Though Parker went along with it during the discussion, he had no intention of following through.

After meeting Priscilla briefly and chatting about fans and Elvis’ movies, the three-hour meeting came to an end. Colonel Parker gave the Beatles a complete set of Elvis’ albums, gun holsters with gold leather belts, and table lamps shaped like a wagon. According to Paul McCartney, “It was one of the great meetings of my life.”
