Legendary Recording Session
This coin commemorates the day Elvis recorded some of his biggest hits. The day was July 2, 1956. Elvis was in New York City following his Steve Allen Show appearance. He left the Hilton Hotel for a 2 p.m. session at RCA’s Studio One, where he spent seven hours recording three songs.
Those songs were “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog,” and “Any Way You Want Me.” The first two songs were released five weeks later as the A and B sides of the same single. That single went on to become the only one ever released that both sides reached number one on the record charts. In fact, it was the most successful single of his career, spending 11 weeks at number one.
Colonel Tom Parker joked to RCA’s vice president that “Hound Dog” would become such a big hit, the company would have to change its corporate symbol from the “Victor Dog” to the “Hound Dog.” During the recording session, Elvis also showed his strength as a music producer. He pushed everyone in the studio through 31 takes of “Hound Dog” before he believed the song was good enough.
