Donates Wallaby to Memphis Zoo
This coin features Elvis with a wallaby that he later donated to the Memphis Zoo. He’d received the wallaby as a gift from some of his Australian fans. The wallaby arrived in a crate one day while he was filming a movie at MGM Studios. He wasn’t sure what a wallaby was at first and hoped it was cuddly. He briefly tried to train it but found he didn’t have the time. Fans sent him another wallaby five years later, which he also donated to the zoo.
Over the years, Elvis received lots of unusual gifts from his fans. One time he received a box with three gophers and a note that said, “We go for you.” Another fan sent him a large box with several smaller boxes inside. After 20 minutes of unwrapping boxes he found a single pecan, which led him to ask, “So they went to all that trouble to tell me I’m a nut?” Elvis’ fans also sent him homemade cookies, knit ties, sweaters, socks, and a pillow. He also received some 300 Saint Christopher Medals, 100 Bibles, and a guitar made of fresh flowers.
