Famous Steve Allen Appearance
In June 1956, Elvis’ controversial appearance on the Milton Berle Show made him a household name. Over the next few weeks, viewers of the Steve Allen Show wrote to the comedian to cancel Elvis’ upcoming appearance because of his dancing style. In spite of this, Allen promised that Elvis would still perform and “be presented in a dignified manner.” That night’s performance went on to become as legendary as the Milton Berle Show dance.
To prevent Elvis from repeating the controversial dance moves from his Milton Berle appearance, Allen had him dress in a tuxedo and sing to a basset hound in a top hat. Over the years, fans criticized Allen for this, claiming it was a deliberate attempt to humiliate Elvis. But Allen insisted that Elvis was in on the idea from the beginning and thought it was hilarious.
Elvis’ performance drove the show’s ratings through the roof, beating the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. The following day, Elvis headed to the studio to record “Hound Dog.” (Sullivan – who said he’d never have Elvis on his show – called Colonel Parker to discuss terms for his appearance.)
