The Kiss Seen Around the World
During the summer of 1956, young photographer Alfred Wertheimer had the rare opportunity to follow an up-and-coming Elvis. This coin features a Wertheimer image from that time.
For decades, the girl in “The Kiss Seen ‘Round the World” photo went unidentified. Her image appeared on countless Elvis collectibles, but no one knew who she was.
Over the years, several women claimed to be the girl in the photograph, but Wertheimer disproved all their claims. Finally, a few years ago, Barbara Gray contacted Wertheimer and after extensive questioning, proved to be the girl in the photograph.
Barbara’s path to this famous moment began days earlier. Having never heard of Elvis, she was dared by her friends to call the young star to set up a date. The next morning, he sent a car for her and the two met at his hotel the following day. Having never seen him before, her first thought upon meeting him was, “God, he’s beautiful.”
After arriving at Richmond’s Mosque Theatre, the pair snuck away from the crowd and shared this now-famous kiss in a stairwell back stage. After the show, Elvis tried to convince her to go to New York with him, but she refused.
