The King Falls in Love with Hawaii
Elvis had become a singing sensation and movie star when he made his first trip to Hawaii. He sailed into Honolulu aboard the USS Matsonia on November 9, 1957. Thousands of fans came to catch a glimpse of their heartthrob. The trip was a last minute decision, after the movie he was going to film was delayed.
While Elvis was in Hawaii, he held three concerts, two on November 10 and one the following day. Almost 15,000 spectators saw Elvis perform on the open-air stage at Honolulu Stadium. The screams were so loud, they often drowned out the songs. At Schofield Barracks, over 10,000 military personnel and the general public enjoyed watching the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll sing. This was his final performance before joining the Army and the last of the decade.
Hawaii would become one of Elvis’ favorite vacation spots and the location for three of his movies. He enjoyed the sandy beaches and surfing and skiing in the waves.
