Made Honorary Colonel
This coin captures Elvis on the day he addressed the Tennessee State Legislature to accept the honorary title of Colonel. Weeks before, that state’s governor and the city’s mayor declared February 25, 1961 to be Elvis Presley Day. They hosted a special luncheon at the Hotel Claridge where RCA gave Elvis a diamond-studded watch in recognition of selling more than 75 million records. It was at this time that Governor Buford Ellington announced Elvis would be made an honorary colonel, with the title, “Colonel, Aide de Camp on the Governor’s Staff.” Elvis performed two charity shows that day to more than 10,000 fans, raising $51,612 to be given to 26 charities.
Elvis officially accepted his new title on March 8, 1961, in an address to the Tennessee State Legislature. He received a badge and certificate recognizing all the contributions he’d made to the state.
