“Heartbreak Hotel” Goes Gold
“Heartbreak Hotel,” Elvis’ first hit song, was written by Tommy Durden and Mae Axton (mother of country legend Hoyt Axton). They played a demo of the song for Elvis and reportedly offered him a share of the publishing rights if it would be his first new release for RCA. (RCA had purchased Elvis’ recording contract from Sun Studios and re-released all of his Sun recordings.)
Elvis was a local hit in Memphis, and a few of his singles had made the country charts before he made his first RCA recording on January 10, 1956. Chet Atkins, who already had a solid reputation in Nashville, joined Elvis and Scotty Moore on guitar. Legendary musician Floyd Cramer played the piano. A popular gospel quartet, “The Jordanaires,” was brought into the studio to sing backup.
The session began in the afternoon and continued through the night. By sunrise, Elvis was on his way to his first national hit single with “Heartbreak Hotel.” Over 300,000 copies were sold in the first three weeks. By April, “Heartbreak Hotel” had already sold one million copies. It became Elvis’ first #1 record on the Pop Singles chart, where it stayed for 8 weeks. In all, the single spent 27 weeks on Billboard’s “Hot 100” list.
