This coin commemorates Elvis’ first concert in New York City. Although he had performed on television shows recorded in the Big Apple, Elvis’ first live concert in the city was on June 9, 1972. In a gold-studded white jump suit, Elvis opened the sold-out show with his first commercially recorded song, “That’s All Right Mama.” He went on to sing other popular songs of the day including Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” plus many of his own classic songs.
Elvis sold out all four shows he played over the three-day weekend, a first for Madison Square Garden. Among the attendees were John Lennon, George Harrison, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and Art Garfunkel.
