Last Pre-Army Recording
In 1958, Elvis Presley went from singing sensation and film actor to American soldier. Because of his fame, Presley probably could have avoided being drafted, but he felt it was his duty to his country. On March 24, 1958, he was sworn into the Army and proudly served for the next two years. A month before he left for the service, he had his last pre-Army recording session in Los Angeles.
Radio Recorders was considered the best recording facility in Los Angeles, and many superstars of the 1950s and 60s used the large studio. Among the greatest was Elvis, and here is where he recorded “Doncha’ Think It’s Time,” “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck,” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart.” The first two songs were released together on April 1, 1958, while Elvis was in boot camp. It gave his fans a chance to hear him croon, even if they couldn’t see him. “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck” became a number-one R&B hit and made it to number two on the Pop charts. Elvis’ version of “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” first recorded by country great Hank Williams, was released in 1965 as part of the Elvis For Everyone album.
