Elvis Receives 8th Degree Black Belt
While in the Army, Elvis was stationed in Germany, where he first became interested in Karate. Private Presley worked with instructor Juergen Seydel regularly and went to Paris, when he had leave, to train with one of Japan’s experts.
After returning to America, Presley earned his Black Belt. In Memphis, Tennessee, he trained with Master Kang Rhee from 1970-74. Elvis really appreciated Master Rhee and gave him a custom-designed Cadillac Eldorado as a gift. In the fall of 1974, Elvis was awarded his eighth-degree black belt on stage in Las Vegas, where he was performing. Close friends say karate gave Elvis peace and spiritual contentment.
