Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special

This coin shows Elvis performing in the famous 1968 “Comeback Special” concert.  Elvis was tired of making “formula” movies.  He was eager to perform again, and to again be the name everyone was talking about.  Elvis told a producer, “I want everyone to know what I can really do!”

The result was a television special titled “Elvis,” which ever since has been called the “Comeback Special.”  It aired on December 3, 1968, and showed footage of Elvis in concert, with big sets and expensive productions.  But it also had footage of him performing in smaller, more intimate sessions.  It was the first time Elvis had performed before a live audience in seven years.

The show was a huge success, establishing that Elvis was again on top of the music world.  The coin shows him in the black jumpsuit he wore during the special.
