Bronze Medal Commemorates Early Astronauts

This medal is a smaller version of the New Frontier Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the astronauts of the Apollo 11 and Friendship 7 spacecraft. The commemorative was authorized by Congress and produced by the U.S. Mint. The 1-1/2-inch bronze medal is scarce and collectable. Three-dimensional engraving means every detail is easy to see.

The medal pays tribute to John Glenn Jr., Neil Armstrong, “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The award ceremony for the Gold Medal took place on November 16, 2011.

The obverse (heads) shows portraits of the three Apollo 11 astronauts facing left and Friendship 7 astronaut John Glenn facing right.  The names of the men are inscribed around the outside of the medal. The reverse (tails) pictures the Lunar Excursion Module orbiting the moon and the Friendship 7 capsule orbiting Earth. The inscription reads, “We came in peace for all mankind.”
