The US Mint commemorated the bicentennial of President Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the release of the first Lincoln cent. The familiar profile of the 16th President is on the obverse (heads) side of each coin. The reverse (tails) shows four different eras in Lincoln’s life. These coins were made of 95% copper, like the original cent coin produced in 1909.
This proof coin set was produced by the US mint in San Francisco using a process that brings out the beauty of each coin’s design. The dies and planchets (the metal disks that will become coins) are polished before the coin is struck. This gives the fields (blank areas) a mirrored look and the image a frosted effect. Proof coins are struck twice, giving the coin a sharper design and rims. The proof sets are packaged at the mint and display America’s coins at their best. Each set is only produced for one year, so the supply is limited.
