This set includes the first coins issued in the 21st century. The year 2000 was the first year the Sacagawea dollar coin was issued. The quarters in this set are the second set of five from the 50 States Program, with different states featured on the reverse (tails) side of the Washinton quarter. The states were honored in the order they ratified the Constitution and joined the Union.
This set also contains the four other denominations produced in 2000. All the proof coins manufactured at the San Francisco Mint. The small “S” mintmark can be found on each coin.
Proof coin sets are produced by the US mint in San Francisco using a process that brings out the beauty of each coin’s design. The dies and planchets (the metal disks that will become coins) are polished before the coin is struck. This gives the fields (blank areas) a mirrored look and the image a frosted effect. Proof coins are struck twice, giving the coin a sharper design and rims. The proof sets are packaged at the mint and display America’s coins at their best. Each set is only produced for one year, so the supply is limited.
