# CN1996M - 1996 United States Mint Set, Denver & Philadelphia Mint Marks
1996 Mint Set Honors 50th Anniversary of Roosevelt Dime –
Includes Special West Point Mint Issue
The first US dime picturing Franklin D. Roosevelt was issued in 1946, just after his death. This 1996 Mint set includes a commemorative dime minted at the West Point, New York, mint in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first Roosevelt dime. In addition to being the US President for four terms, Roosevelt also directed the March of Dimes Program to raise money for victims of polio.
This set also includes mint coins produced at the Philadelphia and Denver mint, as well as mint mark pieces. These pieces are similar in size and color to the cent coin but have mint marks on one side and the seal of the Treasury Department on the other.
Mint sets are produced by the US Mint for the enjoyment of coin collectors. The planchets (blank metal disks that are struck to produce coins) are burnished before being hand loaded into the coining press. They are then placed in special packaging to keep them in uncirculated condition. Each set contains one coin of each denomination and design from each mint that produced coins that year. These mint sets are produced for only one year, so the supply is limited.
The 11 coins in this set (+ the mint mark pieces) are sealed in two protective plastic sleeves. One sleeve has coins from the Philadelphia Mint, while the other sleeve contains coins from the Denver Mint. The West Point dime is enclosed in its own protective sleeve. The set comes with a sheet describing Roosevelt’s life and the life of the coin’s designer, John Ray Sinnock. There is also a chart describing the specifications of each coin including its design, composition, weight, and more. All this is packaged in a colorful envelope.
This set contains:
2 Kennedy Half Dollars
2 Washington Quarters
3 Roosevelt Dimes
2 Jefferson Nickels
