This set contains six proof coins manufactured at the San Francisco Mint. The small “S” mintmark can be found on each coin. The Eisenhower dollar, Kennedy half dollar, and Washington quarter all include dates commemorating the bicentennial that was celebrated the following year. There are no coins in these denominations with a “1975” date, so though these coins were struck in 1975, they show the bicentennial year.
Proof coin sets are produced by the US mint in San Francisco using a process that brings out the beauty of each coin’s design. The dies and planchets (the metal disks that will become coins) are polished before the coin is struck. This gives the fields (blank areas) a mirrored look and the image a frosted effect. Proof coins are struck twice, giving the coin a sharper design and rims. The proof sets are packaged at the mint and display America’s coins at their best. Each set is only produced for one year, so the supply is limited.
