Own the First Issue of the US Special Mint Sets –
Issued in 1965
In 1965, the United States Mint began producing Special Mint Sets. They contain one coin of each denomination and a blue and silver token with the set’s name. The coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint and have a special satin-like finish. The set is sealed in a protective plastic film and protected by two pieces of cardboard. The enclosed sheet from the Director of the Mint explains the significance of this set.
The story behind the special mint sets:
In 1964, America was facing a coin shortage because the price of silver had increased and citizens were keeping their silver coins. In response, the Coinage Act of 1965 was passed. It reduced the silver content in the half dollar and eliminated it from the dime and quarter. In addition, the mint put a halt to yearly proof sets. Instead, coin collectors could purchase Special Mint Sets.
Mint sets are produced by the US Mint for the enjoyment of coin collectors. The planchets (blank metal disks that are struck to produce coins) are burnished before being hand loaded into the coining press. They are then placed in special packaging to keep them in uncirculated condition. Each set contains one coin of each denomination and design from each mint that produced coins that year. These mint sets are produced for only one year, so the supply is limited.
