Do You Have the Complete 1985 Commemorative Airmail Set?
Now you can get the complete four-stamp set of 1985 Commemorative Airmails and save. Two of these stamps honor aviation pioneers. Pictured on the 33¢ stamp is Alfred Verville, who helped Glenn Curtiss design the famed Curtiss Jenny and the Curtiss twin-engined seaplane. On the 39¢ stamp are Lawrence and Elmer Sperry. Elmer was awarded more than 400 patents. He revolutionized flying with such devices as the gyrocompass and speed-direction indicators. Lawrence helped to develop and test such aviation innovations as the automatic pilot, retractable landing gear, and the first guided missile in the form of an aerial torpedo.
The 44¢ Trans-Pacific Airmail stamp celebrates the 50-year anniversary of the China Clipper’s first trans-Pacific airmail flight in 1935. At that time, seaplanes had a non-stop range of less than 800 miles. Remarkably, every leg of the pioneer journey was completed on schedule.
Also included is the 44¢ Fr. Junipero Serra stamp. Junipero Serra founded a mission at what is now San Diego. Under his guidance, eight more missions were founded. These missions formed a base for the settlement of California. Today, over 60% of the state’s population lives in the areas surrounding the old Spanish missions.
